Labette County Public Works track hoe operator Rex Haraughty lifts a large whistle pipe from Town Creek on 3000 Road west of Xavier Road near Chetopa Tuesday morning. Four of the six pieces of the whistle pipe were dislodged as their rock base washed away during the recent flooding. Four large sections of pipe were to be removed and repositioned. Two remained in place. Ed Rakestraw was helping Haraughty with the work and had connected the log chain to the whistle pipe and then to the track hoe bucket.

Labette County Public Works loader operator Mark Johnson moves asphalt damaged in flooding Monday night and Tuesday morning on Rooks Road north of 7000 Road. The county crews were going to push the asphalt aside and rebuild the road with rock so it can reopen. Later, an asphalt surface will be added.

The Neosho River on the east side of Chetopa was rising Tuesday morning and was well out of its banks. Two would-be fishermen watched as the water climbed higher on the rails below. They were also watching a big gar swim around near a submerged bush.

David Kepner of Chetopa strokes his chihuahua, J-Lo, on his front patio while his house dries. He and his son, Dillon, were rescued by boat early Tuesday morning after nearby Town Creek swelled into his home. Kepner fell into a deep hole during the rescue attempt and broke his left foot.
