Vikings earn walk-off victory

The Parsons Vikings began the 2013 season with a walk-off win.
Sam Vratil came up big in the clutch, and the Vikings earned an exciting 15-14 walk-off victory over Columbus on Thursday in the season-opener at Winway Park.
Columbus earned a split by taking game two 14-3.
But in the opener, the Vikings pulled out the win in a back and forth contest that saw Columbus take a five-run lead.

LCHS boys golf team has goals set high

Gilvon Darkis and Braden Page are expected to lead the way for the Labette County High School boys golf team this spring.
A junior, Darkis is the lone returning state qualifier for the Grizzlies.
Darkis finished 54th overall at last year’s Class 4A State Golf Tournament in Kansas City.

LCHS baseball splits with Baxter Springs
BAXTER SPRINGS — While many area games were called off due to the weather, Labette County and Baxter Springs found a way to get in a baseball doubleheader.
The Grizzlies split with the Lions on Tuesday.
Baxter Springs won the first game 12-3, while the Grizzlies took game two 6-4.

LCC softball now ranked, Jayhawk East softball, baseball standings
The Labette Community College softball team is now ranked 17th in the latest NJCAA D-II poll. Cowley is second, Highland is eighth, with LCC 17th and Johnson County 19th.
Ryan Phillips’ Lady Cardinals are 15-13 overall and 10-4 in the Jayhawk East.
LCC is scheduled to host Fort Scott today at 2 p.m.

Parsons will host golf regional, Indy will host tennis regional
Parsons will host a KSHSAA Class 4A Golf Regional on May 13 at Katy Golf Course.
The event will begin at 9 a.m.
Teams competing at the site are Labette County, Baxter Springs, Coffeyville, Columbus, Fort Scott, Frontenac, Girard, Independence, Parsons and Pittsburg.
At the regional, the top two teams and the next five lowest scores that are not members of a qualifying team will advance to the state tournament.

LCC baseball drops two to Neosho County
Neosho County Community College swept a doubleheader from Labette on Friday. The Panthers won game one 8-0 and then took game two 6-1.
LCC had swept both games from Neosho County earlier in the week. But the Cardinals couldn’t get much offense going in the final two games of the series.

PHS girls swim team begins season
The Parsons High School girls swim team began the season with a meet at Coffeyville on Monday.
There were four teams in attendance.
Shannon Dunlay took first place in the 200-yard free with a time of 2:21.12. A junior, Dunlay also placed fourth in the 50-yard free (29.04). Both of those are state-consideration times.

Youth wrestlers advance to state
The Parsons Kids Wrestling Club will be represented at the 2013 Kansas Kids State Wrestling Championships this weekend in Topeka.
The team competed at the District 1 Wrestling Championships last weekend in Holton.
The previous weekend the team competed at the sub-district tourney at Pittsburg State University, where the top four wrestlers in each bracket moved on to the district tourney.

A few local basketball players were listed as all-state by the Wichita Eagle and Topeka Capital-Journal newspapers.

St. Paul baseball off to 2-0 start
ARMA — The St. Paul High School baseball team won the Northeast-Arma Tournament last Friday.
The Indians defeated Chetopa 15-0 in the first game, and then edged Northeast 12-11 for the championship.

The two teams split a doubleheader on Friday, and then split on Saturday in Jayhawk East action.
In the first game on Friday, LCC beat Indy 7-6.
