Fix headed back to state wrestling tourney

PITTSBURG — Moments after securing a trip to state, Andrew Fix appeared calm, cool and collected.
But on the inside, Fix was a bit more excited, if not frenzied.
“I wanted to yell as loud as I could as soon as the match was over,” Fix said of the moment he realized he was going back to state.
Fix had a reason to celebrate. After missing out last year, he’s headed back to the state wrestling tournament.

PITTSBURG — Dakota Lewis was down to his last chance.
And the Labette County High School senior made the most of his final opportunity.

Chargers, Red Devils qualify for state
FREDONIA — Cherryvale and Erie High School athletes competed at the Fredonia Class 3-2-1A Wrestling Regional on Friday and Saturday.
The top four finishers in each weight class advanced to the state tournament.
Several local athletes were able to advance to state, as the Cherryvale Chargers had six wrestlers qualify for state, while the Erie Red Devils had two advance.

Vikings compete at state swim meet
TOPEKA — Five members of the Parsons High School boys swim team competed at the 2013 5-4-3-2-1A State Swimming & Diving Championships at Topeka’s Capitol Federal Natatorium over the weekend.
Tanner Smith of Parsons advanced to the finals in the 100 yard freestyle.
In Friday’s prelims, Smith finished 16th with a time of 53.12. The junior’s time was just good enough to move on to the finals.

LCC basketball teams sweep Neosho County
Tarial Johnson provided a much-needed spark, and the Labette Community College men’s basketball team overcame a sluggish start to knock off visiting Neosho County 80-74 on Saturday.
The Panthers led 38-34 at the break, but the Cardinals put together a nice second half to pull off the come-from-behind victory. The Cardinals outscored the Panthers 46-36 after intermission.

Wrestlers from Parsons and Labette County High Schools competed at the Pittsburg Class 4A Wrestling Regional on Friday and Saturday.
Four area athletes have advanced to state—Andrew Fix of Parsons, Lane Rosenberg of LCHS, Jared Hawks of LCHS, and Dakota Lewis of LCHS.

Oswego boys beat 4A Girard
GIRARD—The Class 2A Oswego Indians knocked off Class 4A Girard 62-56 on Thursday night in non-league boys basketball action.
Girard had a nine-point lead in the third quarter, but the Indians rallied.
“The kids just kept playing,” Oswego Coach Jeff Schreppel said. “Finally some loose balls ended up in our hands, which seems like all season we haven’t been able to get. And we did a good job of attacking the basket.”

Cherryvale splits with Eureka
EUREKA — The host Eureka team defeated the Cherryvale Chargers 68-35 here Friday night in a high school boys’ game.
The Cherryvale girls defeated Eureka 57-41.
In the boys game, Eureka overpowered the visiting Chargers from the start. The home team had a 25-8 advantage after a quarter and built that lead to 55-21 at halftime.

ALTAMONT — The storied history of the Parsons-Labette County rivalry added another memorable chapter on Friday night.

ALTAMONT—The Labette County High School girls basketball team kept their league title hopes alive with a dominating 66-27 victory over rival Parsons on Friday night at Harrison Gymnasium.

Wrestling regional begins
The Pittsburg Class 4A Wrestling Regional began on Friday afternoon at Pittsburg High School, with wrestlers from Parsons and Labette County competing.
The regional continues on Saturday.

Parsons at Labette County
The Parsons Vikings headed to Altamont on Friday night to take on the rival LCHS Grizzlies.
In the girls game, Labette County won 66-27.
In the varsity boys game, Labette defeated Parsons 55-49 in overtime. The Vikings had a five-point lead in the fourth quarter, but could not hold on.

PHS, LCHS meet tonight
The Parsons High School basketball teams will take on rival Labette County tonight in Altamont. The varsity girls play at 6, with the boys to follow at 8 p.m.
The LCHS girls are now 11-6 on the season and 8-2 in the SEK League, which is currently second in the league standings.
The Parsons girls are 1-17 and 0-11 in the league.
The Labette boys are now 12-5 and 5-5 in the SEK. Parsons is 3-15 overall and 1-10 in league play.

LCC women win, men lose at Fort Scott
FORT SCOTT —The Labette Community College women’s basketball team held on late for a 48-46 victory over Fort Scott on Wednesday night at Arnold Arena.
The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for LCC’s women.
The Cardinals used an 11-1 run to end the first half. That scoring spurt gave LCC a 23-19 lead at the half.

The Parsons Vikings and Labette County Grizzlies will be competing at the Pittsburg Class 4A Regional.
The top four in each weight class will advance to state, while the season will end for those who don’t.

Two Labette County High School seniors signed their letters of intent on Wednesday to play football for Fort Scott Community College. Stuart Gatewood, son of Kristy Hamilton, and Cole Reazin, son of Richard and Kim Reazin, both made it official with a signing ceremony at LCHS on Wednesday. Also pictured is LCHS Coach Jesse Ybarra.
