Rivals meet at all-star game

PITTSBURG — Michaela O’Brien and Dontae Johnson both got hot from behind the arc at the 2013 KSEK/KLKC Via Christi All-Star Basketball Games.
The Labette County High School duo both won their respective three-point contests at the seventh annual event, which was held Sunday at the St. Mary’s Colgan Fieldhouse.

Parsons hosts track invite: Krull, Russell shine

Kaylee Krull and Abe Russell led the way for the hosts at Friday’s Parsons Invitational Track Meet.
A Parsons High School junior distance runner, Krull had two first place finishes at the meet, which featured 12 teams.
Krull took first place in the 1600 with a time of 5:38.
Krull also crossed the line first in the 3200, finishing with a time of 12:11.

LCC softball sweeps Hutchinson
An offensive explosion propelled the Labette Community College softball team to a 12-5 win over Hutchinson in game one of a doubleheader on Friday.
Labette completed the sweep by taking game two 9-3.
“We picked up two good wins against a very well coached softball team,” LCC Coach Ryan Phillips said. “This was probably one of the best overall offensive games we have had this season.”

St. Paul earns walk-off victory
ST. PAUL — St. Paul beat Jayhawk-Linn in walk-off fashion on Thursday, winning 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. The second game was called off due to darkness.
In game one, Riley O’Brien went the distance on the mound for St. Paul, allowing just two hits while striking out 12.

Vikings drop two to Blue Comets
CHANUTE — The Parsons High School baseball team began SEK League play on Thursday with two games at Chanute.
The host Blue Comets won both games against the Vikings.
Chanute took game one 8-4. The Comets won the second game 13-3.
No other information on the doubleheader was available at press time.
With the losses, Parsons is now 1-3 on the season and 0-2 in the SEK League.

CHANUTE — With an eight-run lead, and just six outs to go, things were looking good for the Parsons Lady Vikings.

It wasn’t a perfect performance, but Ryan Phillips and his Lady Cardinals will take it.
The Labette Community College softball team swept a doubleheader from Coffeyville CC on Thursday. Labette took game one 6-5, and then won the second game 5-1 to earn the sweep.

Commentary: Should KSHSAA split up Class 4A?

Is it fair that schools like Parsons, Columbus, Girard, Baxter Springs or Frontenac must beat a school more than twice its size to accomplish anything significant in the postseason?

WINFIELD — The Parsons High School girls swim team competed at Winfield on Tuesday.
Shannon Dunlay of Parsons took first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a personal best time of 6:31. The time was also a state consideration time.

Erie’s Mildfelt takes first at home golf invite
ERIE — The Erie High School varsity boys golf team hosted the 2013 Erie Invitational on Monday.
The tournament was an 18 hole tournament, and featured nine teams.
Erie’s Hunter Mildfelt took first place overall with a score of 78.
Erie’s Zach McCoy shot a 94 and finished 11th overall.

Grizzlies golf team wins Miami invite
MIAMI, Okla. — The Labette County High School boys golf team competed at Peoria Ridge Golf Course on Monday at the Miami Invitational.
There were 14 schools from Kansas and Oklahoma competing.
With three golfers in the top 10, the Grizzlies cruised to first place at the event with a team score of 324.
Labette County was 18 strokes better than second place Pryor.

Youth wrestlers earn medals at state tourney
Three youth wrestlers from Parsons brought back some hardware from the 2013 USAWKS Kansas State Folkstyle Wrestling Championships. The event was held last weekend at the Topeka Expocentre, with more than 1,500 youth wrestlers competing.
Parker Winder, Tate Thurman, and Kolton Misener all earned top three finishes in their respective brackets.

GALENA— Athletes from St. Paul and Oswego were among those competing at the Galena Bulldog Relays track meet last Thursday.

LCC baseball drops three of four to Highland
The Labette Community College baseball team dropped three of four games to visiting Highland over the weekend.
On Friday, Highland swept a doubleheader from the Cardinals, winning game one 5-0 before taking game two 5-1.
