Doris E. Reed, 89, of Parsons, a retired elementary teacher, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday, April 15, 2011, at her home in Parsons.

She was born Nov. 20, 1921, at Oak Valley to J.W. Glenn and Josie Anna (Russell) Smith. She grew up in Longton, graduated from Longton High School and attended Independence Junior College. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from what is now Pittsburg State University.

Doris taught 33 years, first in rural schools and later for 17 years at the Washington School in Parsons, from which she retired.

For many years she was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and in recent years of First Christian Church. She was a longtime member of the Round Table Study Club and had been a board member and secretary of the Parsons Historical Society.

On Nov. 4, 1942, she married H. Dean Reed at Independence.

Survivors include her husband, H. Dean Reed of the home; a son, Michael D. Reed and his wife, Jewell, of Parsons; two daughters, Susan M. Goodman and her husband, John, and Jennifer A. Sprague and her husband, John, all of Wichita; five grandchildren, Connor Goodman, Caitlyn Goodman, Emily Sprague, Rachel Sprague and Madelyn Sprague; a sister, Marjorie Morgridge-Weniger of Wichita; and a sister-in-law, Margaret Raines of Iola.

A sister, Blossom Buchanan, preceded her in death.

The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
