WHITEWATER — Florence Marie Hooper, 76, of Whitewater, formerly of Oswego, died at 3:40 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2011, at Wheatstate Manor in Whitewater.

She was born Jan. 5, 1935, in Oswego to Raymond and Faye (Correll) Wertz. She graduated from Labette County High School in Altamont.

On Oct. 30, 1959, she married Eldrid Mayo. They lived in the Parsons and Thayer. The couple later divorced. Mr. Mayo died on March 30, 1986.

On May 17, 1976, she married Denver Carl Hooper. They resided in Independence, where they ran Hooper’s Bait Shop for many years. They later moved to Oklahoma and then back to Kansas, living at Howard and Augusta. He preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 2009.

Florence was an artistic person. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting, fabric painting and playing the piano.

Survivors include her son, Billy R. Mayo and his wife, Janice, of Derby; a daughter, Teresa Murray and her husband, Bruce, of Rose Hill; three grandchildren, Cody Thornton, Darren Thornton and Elizabeth; two great-grandchildren, John and Jacob; a sister, Irene Eastwood and her husband, David, of Edgerton; a brother, Kenny Wertz and his wife, Ann; eight stepchildren, Larry Hooper and his wife, Deb, of Cherryvale, Anita McCoy and her husband, Herk, of Stilwell, Rhonda Sherwood and her husband, Bill, of Augusta, Mary Perry and her husband, Joe, of Cabot, Ark., Mike Hooper and his wife, Michelle, of Smithsville, Mo., Marty Hooper and his wife, Tracy, of Haysville, Kim Hooper and his wife, Cindy, of Cherryvale, and Vicky Barnhart and her husband, Michael, of Billings, Okla.; 26 stepgrandchildren; 39 stepgreat-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a stepson, Carl Eugene Hooper.

The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Murdock Funeral Home in Oswego. Burial will be in Oswego Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
