Julia Mae Criss, 79, a longtime Parsons resident, died at 1:40 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2011, at her home.

She was born on June 27, 1931, in Oswego to Andrew and Helen (Parks) Johnson. She grew up in Oswego, where she attended school and was a graduate of Oswego High School.

In the 1960s, she worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant before moving to Topeka for 10 years. While living in Topeka, she worked as a dietary aide at the Topeka State Hospital and returned to Parsons in 1990.

She married Thomas Patterson in 1950. They later divorced.

In 1968, she married Merrit Criss. They later divorced.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas “Ray” Patterson and David Patterson, both of Parsons, and Clifford Criss of Topeka; a daughter, Phyllis Harding of Parsons; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Eric Johnson of Topeka; and a sister, Marcella Booker of Inkster, Mich.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew “Skip” Johnson; and a daughter, Saundra Day, in 2006.

The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oswego Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Friends may also call at their convenience throughout today at the funeral home.
