James G. “Jim” Merrill, 71, of Parsons died at 4 a.m. Friday, June 17, 2011, at Parsons Presbyterian Manor. He had been in failing health.

He was born Aug. 26, 1939, in Galesburg to James Franklin and Anna (Porter) Merrill. He grew up and attended school in the Galesburg area.

He worked construction most of his adult life and also for the city of Parsons in the Water Department for a time.

He enjoyed gardening, farming, reading and spending time with his grandchildren.

He married Charlotte Farran. They later divorced.

Survivors include a son, James D. Merrill of Parsons; two daughters, Carol Merrill and Lisa Merrill, both of Parsons; four grandchildren, Steven Merrill, Haley Riley, Anthony Lee and Olivia Lee; and a brother, John Merrill of Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother; a sister; and a son, Nick, in 1984.

Following cremation, a graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at McCune Cemetery under the direction of Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons.
