ST. PAUL — Donald E. “Donnie” Carter, 71, of St. Paul died at 11:25 a.m. Sunday, July 17, 2011, at Labette Health in Parsons.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1939, on the Big Island, St. Paul, to Raymond A. and Agnes (Thielan) Carter. He was a 1957 graduate of St. Francis High School in St. Paul.

He served in the U.S. Army and, upon his honorable discharge, returned home as a fifth-generation farmer of the Big Island, south of St. Paul, until his retirement in 2002.

Donnie was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and the St. Paul Saddle Club. He served on the St. Paul Mission Day Committee for many years, organizing the horse and pony pulls, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was also a proud supporter of the St. Paul Indian sports teams and had been awarded “Fan of the Year” by the St. Paul Indian Booster Club.

He married Sharon Hazen in July 1963. They later divorced.

Survivors include four sons, Steve Kirk, Mike Carter and his wife, Coleen, Ed Carter and Roy Carter and his wife, Janis, all of St. Paul; seven grandchildren, Kyle Kirk, Kayla, Kelsey and Kolby Carter, Drake, Morgan and Kaitlyn Carter; and a brother, Raymond B. Carter and his wife, Rosseda.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul with the Rev. Thomas Leland officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. today at the church, where the family will receive friends immediately following the rosary.
