GIRARD — Theda K. Westhoff, 84, of Girard, formerly of Walnut, died at 1:20 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, 2011, at her daughter’s residence in Bonner Springs surrounded by her family.

She was born on Sept. 19, 1926, at Girard to Charles and Essie (Hazen) Doherty. She attended schools in the Greenbush, Walnut and St. Paul areas.

She married Leonard M. Westhoff on May 23, 1944, in St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Greenbush. He preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 1996.

They were lifelong farmers of rural Walnut. She moved to Girard in 2007.

She was a member of the 8 & 40 Patriotic Club; the Gard Lee Post No. 292, American Legion Auxiliary of Walnut; and the Ladies Altar Society.

She enjoyed spending time with and cooking for her family, sewing, ceramics and dancing.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Girard following the closure of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut and St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Greenbush.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Dean Noe of Farlington, Patsy and Mike McVey of Butler, Irene and Kelly Gillette of Pittsburg, Linda and Curtis Boatman of Girard, Ruth and Wayne Leritz of Girard, Pauline and Dave Wells of McCune, Charlene and Bill Coomes of St. Paul, Debbie and Mick Vitt of Bonner Springs, Cathy and Todd McDonald of Lamar and Karen and Brian Collier of Liberal; 27 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; her brothers, John Doherty and his wife, Sharon, of Frontenac, Leo Doherty and his wife, Thelma, and Lloyd Doherty, all of Wichita; and her sister, Teresa Beene and her husband, Tom, of Canon City, Colo.

She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph C. “Joe” Westhoff, on Feb. 9, 1991; a daughter, Mary Catherine Westhoff in infancy; a great-granddaughter, Jenna Leighann Craft, on Nov. 7, 1996; two brothers, Bill Doherty and Chuck Doherty; and two sisters, Thelma Hammerbacher, Marita Winslow and Fidelis Meyer.

The Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Girard with the Rev. Roger Lumbre officiating. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery at Greenbush. The rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. today at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard, where the family will receive friends following the rosary. Friends may call after 11 a.m. today at the funeral home.
