INDEPENDENCE — Wilma G. Karstetter, 87, of Independence, formerly of Cherryvale, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.

She was born on March 26, 1924, in Okeesa, Okla., to Cecil P. and Edna (Nickoly) Fish. She earned a master’s degree in education from Pittsburg State University. She taught elementary school until retiring.

She married Melvin L. Karstetter on Aug. 10, 1947. He preceded her in death on Dec. 21, 1991.

Survivors include two sons, Tim of McPherson and Stan of Cherryvale; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Norma Gragg of Bedford, Texas, and Donna Cox of Carl Junction, Mo.; and a brother, Cecil Fish of Baldwin City.

The celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Hope Christian Church in Cherryvale. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Potts Chapel in Cherryvale.

Memorials are suggested to the Arthritis Foundation and may be left in care of the funeral home.
