CHANUTE — Virgil L. Grizzle, 82, of Chanute died Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.
He was born Sept. 19, 1929, in Iola the son of George F. and Minnie M. (Jones) Grizzle. He graduated from LaHarpe High School.
On Nov. 13, 1949, he married Wanda Lee Larkey and they made their home in Odense. In 1964, they moved to Wichita and since 1969 they have resided in Chanute. His wife preceded him in death on Nov. 29, 2010.
Mr. Grizzle farmed and milked cows. He worked as an inspector for the Kansas Department of Weights and Measures before retiring in 1995.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Chanute. He enjoyed outdoor activities of camping, boating and water skiing. He was an avid basketball fan and rooted for the University of Kansas Jayhawks.
Survivors include a son, Ernie L. Grizzle and his wife, Glenna, of Chanute; a daughter, Colleen Brownewell and her husband, Claude, of Parsons; four grandchildren, Thomas Grizzle, Scott Bradburn, Sarah Nordt and Stacia Meek; three great-grandchildren; five brothers, Lionel Grizzle of Sweet Home, Ore., Glen Grizzle of Lebanon, Ore., Darrell Grizzle of Wellington, Alvin Grizzle of LaHarpe and George Grizzle Jr. of El Dorado; and a sister, Elva Barnes of Cassoday.
He also was preceded in death by a sister, Velda Parks.
The service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Chapel in Iola. Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in LaHarpe Cemetery at LaHarpe.
The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association and may be left with the funeral home.
