THAYER — Larry Eugene Umbarger, 73, of Thayer, died Thursday, Oct. 27, 2011, at the Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

He was born in rural Thayer on Jan. 4, 1938, the son of Leo and Mattie (Cottrell) Umbarger. He graduated from Thayer High School in 1955.

He married Carol May Thornton on Jan. 15, 1956, at Thayer Christian Church. She survives of the home.

Mr. Umbarger was a farmer and worked as a manager for the coop, Chanute Grain and Beachner Grain.

He was a member of the Thayer Christian Church where he was a deacon and an elder.

Other survivors include three sons, Timothy Umbarger of Petersburg, Neb., Michael Umbarger and Larry E. Umbarger II, both of Thayer; three daughters, Carolyn Rogers of Barnsdall, Okla., Nancy Ohmart of Joplin and Katrina Stich of Chanute; 30 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Andy John Leck; a brother, Gary Umbarger; and baby sister, Gayle LaVonne Umbarger.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Thayer Christian Church. Burial will follow in the Thayer Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Penwell-Gabel Gibson Chapel in Chanute.

Memorials may be made to Thayer Christian Church or Thayer Christian Church Pre-School and may be left with the funeral home.
