DENNIS — Perry Eugene “Doc” Schurr, DVM, 88, of rural Dennis died on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at home.

Perry was born in Pauline to Henry B. and Neta Ollie (Hibbs) Schurr on April 9, 1923. He graduated from Berryton High School in 1941.

He served in World War II aboard the USS Sirius in the U.S. Navy. He was honorably discharged in November 1945. He graduated from Kansas State University, Manhattan, in 1956 with a doctor of veterinary medicine degree. After graduation, he was self-employed in a vet practice for eight years. He then became employed with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service for 20 years. He retired in 1986.

He enjoyed horseback riding, team roping, rodeos and his dogs. He liked to watch professional and college football.

On Oct. 1, 1972, Perry married Mary Alice Simmons of Independence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons from a previous marriage, Rolla Schurr of Pittsburg and David Schurr and his wife, Shirley, of Citrus Heights, Calif.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a loving family of in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a grandson, Jeremiah Schurr.

In accordance with Perry’s wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of life service from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the family home, rural Dennis.

Derfelt Funeral Home of Oswego is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to local 4-H horse clubs, saddle clubs or Hospice Care of Kansas. Memorials can be sent to the funeral home, 203 Illinois, Oswego, 67356.
