Jesse “Uncle Jesse” Moreno, 87, a lifelong Parsons resident, died at 2:12 p.m. Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Labette Health.
He was born Feb. 25, 1925, in Parsons to Delores D. and Bessie (Guillen) Moreno. He attended Parsons High School and served in the United States Army during World War II as a squad leader with the rank of corporal.
For 25 years he was employed by the Coca Cola Bottling Co. in Parsons and later worked for the Parsons school district, retiring from full-time employment in 1990. He continued working part time for the school district until recently.
He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parsons. He loved sports and was often seen at many sporting events in Parsons. He was an umpire and referee until he was 59 years old. For many years he worked as a field attendant for Viking football games. He loved to spend time with his family and to attend dances.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald Moreno and his wife, Sherry, of Republic, Mo., and Donald Moreno and his wife, Malinda, of Springfield, Mo.; two daughters, Sherry Moreno and Sheila Moreno, both of Sparta, Mo.; two grandsons, Jason Moreno and Jordon Moreno, both of Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Joe Moreno and his wife, Eunice, of Salisbury, Md., and David Moreno and his wife, Pat, of Parsons; a sister, Emma Garcia of Overland Park; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Catherine Moreno, Pauline Reese and Mary Grant.
The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors given by the Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
The rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Sunday and the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
