ALTAMONT — John W. Edwards, 89, of Altamont died at 11:10 a.m. Friday, June 29, 2012, in the emergency room at Labette Health.

He was born on Nov. 18, 1922, at Mount Judea, Ark., to Charles and Nerva Jane (Cheatham) Edwards. He graduated from Jasper High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He earned a bachelor of science degree in animal nutrition from Kansas State University. He was a member of the Block and Bridle Club, the Extension Club and the Agronomy Club.

He was county supervisor of the Farmers Home Administration in Steven, Wilson, Labette, Neosho and Cherokee counties for 30 years. He worked for two years for the Kansas State Extension as farm fact supervisor. He was a charter member of the Altamont Saddle Club, Labette County Sheriff’s Posse and Labette County Economic Advisory Committee.

He married Freda McCutchen on March 29, 1947. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in March. She survives of the home in Altamont.

Additional survivors include a daughter, Dee Dee Caldwell and her husband, Pat, of Manhattan; two sons, Larry Edwards and his wife, Coleen, of Lawrence and Brad Edwards and his wife, Alisyn, of Wichita; four grandchildren; a brother, Charles Edwards of Harrison, Ark.; and a sister, Virgie Edwards Patterson of Harrison, Ark.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Ruby Edwards, twin sisters Ineva Burdine and Geneva Criner, June Garner and Sybil Hefly; as well as three brothers, Herbert Edwards, J.B. Edwards and Frank Edwards.

The graveside funeral service was on Monday at Maplewood Cemetery, Harrison, Ark.
