THAYER — Doris L. Cox, 79, of rural Thayer, died at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, July 1, 2012, at Wilson Medical Center in Neodesha. Death followed a lengthy illness.

She was born on May 24, 1933, at Urbana to William and Ethel (Gough) South. She grew up in the Erie, Galesburg and Thayer areas and graduated from Thayer High School.

On Jan. 2, 1955, she married Virgil L. Cox at the Church of the Brethren near Galesburg. After their wedding, they lived in the same areas and have lived on the same farm since 1968. He survives of the home.

Doris operated the family dairy farm for a number of years. She worked at Gragg Cabinet Co. in Cherryvale for 14 years and for Hi-Lo Industries in Chanute for 12 years before retiring. She was a member of Dennis United Methodist Church. She loved to read, garden and draw.

Other survivors include a daughter, Joyce West and her husband, Jim, of Neodesha; three sons, Gene Cox and his wife, Susan, Dave Cox and his wife, Teresa, and Randall Cox, all of Thayer; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon South of Olathe and Larry South of Thayer; two sisters, Wilma Kimrey of Parsons and Virginia Koch of Sun City, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Juanita Wilkerson of Parsons.

She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Dennis United Methodist Church. Burial will be in South Center Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home.
