She was born April 11, 1927, at Hill Top, Ark., to Louis M. and Nancy Elizabeth (Jones) Newberry. When she was 11 years old her family moved to the rural Erie area to farm. She attended country schools and lived in rural Erie most of her life until moving to Prairie Mission.
On March 6, 1949, she married Eldon D. Volk at Erie. Together they farmed for many years. Mr. Volk preceded her in death on Nov. 5, 1993. Joan enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. She loved cooking and baking cookies to be given to friends and family. She attended the First Baptist Church in Erie until her health failed.
Survivors include two daughters, Janice Pattinson and her husband, Jim, of Springfield, Mo., and Martha Hizey and her husband, Ray, of Erie; grandchildren, Kristen Pattinson of Springfield, Mo., Jason Pattinson and his wife, Brandi, of Republic, Mo., and Megan Hizey of Carl Junction, Mo., and her fiance, Brian Lamb, of Pittsburg, and Ryan Hizey of Erie; a great-granddaughter, Alexis Pattinson of Republic, Mo.; and three sisters, Olvie Elmer of Walnut, Elveta Dorris of Erie and Beatrice Gafni of Afula, Israel.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Emerson Newberry, Arvin Newberry and Eltie Newberry; and four sisters, Dorothy Armer, Juanita Davidson, Louise Hines and Oda Dawson.
The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Galesburg. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Erie from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
