He was born on Aug. 5, 1936, at Independence to William H. and Pauline E. (Wiley) Ney Sr. The Ney family moved to Parsons in 1946, and Bill graduated from Parsons High School in 1954 and from Parsons Junior College in 1956. He also earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Pittsburg State University. He served two years on active duty with the U.S. Army and taught two years in Salem, Mo.
From 1962 to 1979, he was employed at the Parsons State Hospital and Training Center. In 1979, he moved to Topeka and was a personnel manager for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment until he retired.
On Feb. 1, 1964, he married Linda Kaye Bishop in Parsons. She preceded him in death on July 28, 1996. After her death, he returned to Parsons.
Bill was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Parsons, where he had served as an elder. He was an avid golfer and was on the golf teams at both Parsons High School and Pittsburg State University. He continues to hold the record of one of the Parsons High School top five golf tournament winners. He also enjoyed dancing.
Survivors include his fiance, Alice Miller of Parsons; two sons, Jeff Ney and his wife, Jill, of Olathe and Charles Ney of Philadelphia; four grandchildren, Drew Ney, Macenzie Ney, Hannah Ney and Jack Ney, all of Olathe; a brother, Dick Ney of Parsons; Alice’s son, Neil Frihart, and his wife, Denise; her daughter-in-law, Laura Hilderbrand; and her 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1978 and his mother in 1994.
There will be a celebration of life at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Parsons. Casual dress is requested. Private burial will be later at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Parsons. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Parsons.
