TOPEKA — Dorris E. Johnson, 93, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, died of natural causes Thursday, July 19, 2012, in Topeka.
She was born June 4, 1919, in Topeka the daughter of the Rev. Alfred H and Alta Susan Tebben. She was one of four children, who all preceded her in death.
She was a graduate of Holton High School and attended Kansas Wesleyan, where she met her husband, Harold C. Johnson. They were married in Wichita on Jan. 27, 1940. He preceded her in death on July, 27 2008. They were married for 69 years.
The family settled in Parson in 1948. She finished her master's in education soon after at Pittsburg State University and would spend most of the next three decades teaching high school English and broadening the horizons of her students.
She and Harold moved to Topeka in 1982 to enjoy their golden years and be nearer family. She was an avid reader and traveler who loved making people smile.
She was a member of Chapter CS of the PEO Sisterhood.
Survivors include her children, Susan E. Hughes of Topeka and H. Kemper Johnson of New York N.Y.; two grandsons, Jeff H. Hughes and John Hughes of Topeka and his wife, Stephanie; great-granddaughters, Taylor, Talisa and Tatenm and extended family of Leanna, Anita and Anna Parrish.
The memorial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 S.W. Urish Road, Topeka.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Topeka Public Library Bookmobile.
