MEDICINE LODGE — James B. “J.B.” Nick, 41, of Medicine Lodge died early Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, near Salina as a result of injuries received in an automobile accident. 

He was born on March 26, 1971, in Topeka to Lamar and Mary (Purdon) Nick. He grew up in the Girard area and graduated from Girard High School in 1989. He graduated from North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit in 1991.

He was a truck driver for Coffeyville Resources in Plainville and a carpenter.

He was a member of the Catholic Church, and he enjoyed his family and especially his children, coaching their ball teams and helping with their 4-H projects. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and carpentry work. He lived in Beloit from 1989 until 2010, and he was a volunteer with the fire and rescue squad there.

Survivors include his parents of Kingfisher, Okla.; his children, Whitney of Girard and her mother, Kristi, Kaitlyn of Kingfisher, Austyn and Shaelyn of Beloit and their mother, Marna, Logann and Jaedyn of Tipton and their mother, Vanessa; his sister, Cara Gerken and her husband, David, of Cashion, Okla.; his nieces, Sydnee, Madelyn and Victoria; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Alfreda Purdon and Robert and Lois Nick; and his uncles, Joe Purdon and Harold Purdon.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Girard with the Rev. Thomas Leland as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery at Greenbush. The rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard, where the family will receive friends following the rosary. Friends may call after 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
