ALTAMONT — Bernita Sparks, 81, of Altamont died Friday, Sept. 21, 2012, at her home. Her death was unexpected.

She was born on Sept. 23, 1930, in Chanute to August E. and Frances Annette (Nelson) Erickson. She grew up and attended schools in Savonburg and Stark. She graduated from Stark High School and Kansas City Secretarial School.

She owned and operated a day care from her home for 44 years and had especially fond memories of the children she had cared for through the years. She attended First Baptist Church in Altamont and enjoyed reading and playing the piano.

She married Melvin Howard Sparks on June 24, 1950, in Eureka Springs, Ark. He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1996.

Survivors include three sons, Philip Sparks and his wife, Jody, of Altamont, Michael Sparks of Parsons and David Wayne Sparks of Nashville, Tenn.; two daughters, Sharon Douglas and her husband, Tom, of Henderson, Texas, and Louise Searcy and her husband, Bill, of Munds Park, Ariz.; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and four children.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
