Punky was born on Oct. 6, 1926, in Laverne, Okla., to Ora and Della (Campbell) Hurt. She grew up and attended schools in Laverne.
She married Wilfred J. Mertens in 1945 in Meade. They had five daughters, and Wilfred preceded her in death in 1959. She married Norman Peacock in 1960 and had a daughter and a son, and Norman preceded her in death in 1974. Punky married Larry Huffman in 1985, and Larry preceded her in death in 2005.
Punky enjoyed life to the fullest, enjoyed fishing and knew no stranger. You always knew where you stood with Punky.
Survivors include four daughters Ruth Stevenson and her husband, Van, of Olathe, Mary Smith of Hepler, Sharon Miller and her husband, Vince, of Parsons and Jackie Casey and her husband, Pat, of McCracken; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Debbie, Brent, Zach, Jenny, James, Abby, Kail, Amanda, John, Miles, Tammy, John, Ben, Jacob, Josh, Terri, Savannah, Madison, Sammy, Tommy, Joe Del, Julie, Avery, Missy, Roger, Ryan, Bree, Wes, Nikki, Connor, Lauren, Brad, Katie, Henry, Angela, Joey, Raul, Summer, Raulie, April, Allen, Kayla, Maribeth, Jessie and Matt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She also was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Norman Allen (Pete) Peacock; two daughters, Sandra Mertens Eggen and Christiana Mertens; twin brothers, Alfred Hurt and Albert Hurt; a sister, Letha Long; and a son-in-law, Leonard Smith.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard with Dr. Steve Miller officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard, where friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday.
