COLUMBUS — Darrell Eugene Preston, 57, of Columbus died at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2012, at his home following an illness.

He was born Sept. 12, 1955, in Columbus. His parents were Wyman and Janice (Barton) Preston. He had lived in the area all of his life. He graduated from Southeast High School, Cherokee, before attending North Central Kansas Technical College in Beloit, specializing in heavy equipment operation.

He owned and operated Preston Construction and Cherokee Limestone Quarry, rural Columbus. He was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. Among his greatest pastimes were working, fishing and hunting.

Darrell was married to Beverly Goins on July 30, 1976, in Columbus. She died July 6, 2009.

Surviving is a daughter, Kimberly (and Nathaniel) Tingley, McCune; three grandchildren, William Haines, Dakota Wammack and Jerason Wammack; his father, Wyman Preston, Columbus; two brothers, Doug (and Debbie) Preston, Hallowell and Dan (and Liz) Preston, Columbus; two sisters, Connie (and Stan) Dillinger, McCune, and Cheryl (and Jake) Gurnee, Hallowell; and many nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at McKee Cemetery in rural Columbus under the direction of Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus. Pastor Jeff Swart will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Jimmy Zwahlen, Jody Zwahlen, Eric Preston, Mike Saporito, Robbie Simoncic and Derek Van Houten.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
