She was born on Sept. 14, 1922, to Frank and Mabel (Goodwin) Hayes at the family farm near Edna. She attended Edna Grade School and graduated in May 1940 from Edna High School.
She had always planned to teach elementary school and taught for a time at Hawkins School in 1943 and then later at the Edna, Valeda and Chetopa schools.
On July 28, 1948, she married Samuel Fred Cooper. Following marriage, they lived and farmed south of Edna.
In 1960, she began teaching for USD 506 as a special reading teacher. She traveled to the schools of Ellis, Fairview, Bartlett, Meadow View and Altamont. She received her master’s of teaching degree in the late 1970s. She retired from teaching in 1987 to take care of her husband during ill health. He preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1994.
She had been active in First Baptist Church in Edna through most of her life and had been the Sunday school superintendent for many years. She had also taken many children to Sunday school and vacation Bible school over the years.
Survivors include two sons, Dwight Cooper and his wife, Brenda, and Kent Cooper and his wife, Deb, all of rural Edna; three granddaughters, Abbie Stratton and her husband, Adam, Kylie Ludwig and her husband, Jared, and Kasie Settle and her husband, Lewis; and three great-grandsons, Cooper Stratton, Colton Ludwig and Jax Ludwig.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Cooper.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Edna. Burial will follow at North Edna Cemetery. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, Altamont. The casket will remain closed.
