Sylvia L. Newman, 83, of Parsons died at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Elmhaven West.

She was born March 28, 1929, at Commerce, Okla., a daughter of Ralph Addison and Ona Pearl (Hollis) Mercer. She attended Commerce schools. In 1970 she began employment at the former The Broderick Co. in Parsons, where she worked until retiring in 1985.

On March 31, 1970, she married John D. Newman at Welch, Okla. He preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 1999.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Turner of Miami, Okla., and Kevin Turner of Altamont; three daughters, Glenda Neighbors of Bloomsdale, Mo., Tammy Jones of Parsons and Lisa Potter of Monroe, La.; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Carriger on Jan. 1, 1999; three brothers, Delbert, Otis and Kenneth Mercer; and two sisters, Lucille Davis and Joyce Turner.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. today at the Baxter Springs Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Alzheimer’s Association and may be left at or mailed to the Carson-Wall Funeral Home, P.O. Box 942, Parsons, KS 67357.
