He was born on March 31, 1967, in Parsons to Lawrence C. and Katherine (McAtee) Smith. He grew up in St. Paul, where he attended school and was a 1985 graduate of St. Paul High School. He then attended Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo.
He was co-owner and employed at HMS Enterprises Inc. of Brazilton. In his many duties for HMS, he traveled frequently to the company’s retail stores and had operated the Carpet Plus Stores in Emporia and Grand Island, Neb., for extended periods, having lived in those cities for a time as well.
He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a past member and officer of the Emporia Jaycees and at one time had served as a leader in the local Cub Scout chapter. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Las Vegas, attending sporting events and going to casinos. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs. He was a charter member of the Mid America Fantasy Football League and had won four championships.
He married Paula Wiatrak. They later divorced.
Survivors include a stepson, Preston Jacquinot of St. Paul; four brothers, Keith Smith and his wife, Becky, Mark Smith and his wife, Cheryl, Scott Smith and his wife, Joni, all of St. Paul, and Robert Smith and his wife, Elizabeth, of Pittsburg; and two sisters, Kim Spielbusch and her husband, Ed, of Parsons and Amy Lomshek and her husband, Eddie, of Pittsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. The family will receive friends following the rosary at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Francis parish hall. Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
