SAN MARCOS, Texas — Emma Jean Hoffman of San Marcos, Texas, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, at age 87.
She was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Fort Scott to Orville W. and Kate Arnold. She moved with her parents and older brother to Parsons, when she was in the sixth grade. She enjoyed her time in school and remembered all her teachers. She shared many fond childhood memories with her family. One of her favorites was the playhouse built by her dad with windows and a bed big enough for her to lie in. She gave this bed to her first granddaughter, Holly.
Emma Jean started Parsons Junior College at age 17.
She married Emmett Lee Hoffman in 1946, and they raised two sons and a daughter in Parsons. She did accounting work at the office of Mason, Plowman and Mason for 30 years.
After retirement, the couple enjoyed years of travel. They visited many countries and especially loved the warm beaches of Acapulco and cruising the seas, making new friends wherever they went. They settled in Harlingen, Texas, as “winter Texans” and moved there permanently in the 1990s.
When health issues prompted a change in residence, Emmett and Emma Jean moved to Emeritus Assisted Living Community in San Marcos, Texas. They enjoyed being close to family members and remained deeply devoted to each other until Emmett’s death in 2008.
She is survived by sons, Mitchell and wife Julie of San Marcos, Texas, Dennis and wife Patti of Parsons; a daughter, Marcia Hampton and husband Jon of Schertz, Texas; seven grandchildren and their families, Aaron and Sarah Hoffman (and Harper), Eric and Daisa Hoffman (and Christian and Hudson), Heather Mauze (and Cameron and Courtney), Heidi Hampton, Holly and R.J. Norman (and Allison and Alyssa), Elizabeth and Tony Ozuna (and Jake, Allison, Tyler and Katelyn), Glenn and Michelle Head (and Audrey and Mason); and sister-in-law, Bonnie McMillan.
Emma Jean was preceded in death by her parents, brother and husband.
A service will be in Parsons at Memorial Lawn Cemetery at a later date. The Carson-Wall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
