He was born Nov. 14, 1925, in rural Labette City to Joseph Leon and Esther Lois (Walker) Jones. As a young boy, he grew up and attended school in rural Labette County at Center Bethel School and was a 1943 graduate of Labette County Community High School in Altamont. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy on the USS Bougainville escort carrier.
He married Priscilla Hockett on May 17, 1946, in Parsons. For a time, they lived in Parsons until moving to Altamont, where they have lived since. For many years, Mr. Jones owned and operated Jones Auto Sales and Service and also raised hogs.
In younger years, he attended Center Bethel Church and had also served as a Boy Scout leader while his sons were involved in scouting. Hubert enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising German shepherd dogs. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and traveling to Buena Vista, Colo., for hunting trips. Mr. Jones had resided at Elmhaven East in Parsons since 2006.
Survivors include his wife, Priscilla Jones of the home; two sons, David Jones and his wife, Elaine, of rural Parsons and Dean Jones and his wife, Sandy, of rural Altamont; a daughter, Elaine Phillips and her husband, Allen, of rural Altamont; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Orlena Nutt, in 2004.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Center Bethel Church. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
