She was born on Sept. 6, 1948, in Parsons to Louis G. and Ruth L. (Grady) Herold. She attended Altamont Grade School and was a graduate of Labette County Community High School. She attended John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark.
On July 5, 1969, she married Robert Lee Thompson in Altamont. After marriage, the couple lived in Biloxi, Miss., Misawa, Japan, and Latiano, Italy, before returning to Labette County with their two children.
After earning her bachelor’s degree from Pittsburg State University, she worked as an elementary school teacher. The family later lived in Bolingbrook, Ill., Des Moines, Iowa, Pacifica, Calif., and Oklahoma City, Okla.
In 1977, Barbara became a Girl Scout leader and held many positions during her years as both a volunteer and professional Girl Scout.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Altamont and had taught Sunday school and worked with Awanas. Her great loves were family and God. She also enjoyed traveling, geocaching and being involved in church activities.
Survivors include her loving husband of 43 years, Bob Thompson of the home; a daughter, Leanna Martin and her husband, Brian, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a son, David Thompson and his wife, Sarah, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and two brothers, John Herold and his wife, Rosadene, of Lakeville, Ind., and Richard Herold and his wife, Alice, of Hemet, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister-in-law, Joanna Brandon.
The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Altamont. Burial will be in Elston Cemetery northeast of Altamont. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont.
