He was born May 14, 1938, in Parsons to Reginald and Alberta McDonald Smothers. He attended elementary school in Centerville and graduated from high school in Humboldt. He attended Northern Montana College and the University of Minnesota.
He worked for AT&T in Julian, Calif.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; five children, Joni Smothers of Montgomery, Ala., David Smothers, Tim Smothers and Dan Smothers, all of Julian, Calif., and Amy Shaw of Las Vegas; two sisters, Judy Anderson of Gardner and Genell Smothers of Leawood; and seven grandchildren.
Bonham Bros & Stewart Mortuary and Cremation Service of Ramona, Calif., was in charge of arrangements.
