DERBY — James D. “Jim” Hopkins, 63, of Derby, a former St. Paul resident, died at 4:03 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2010, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita following an extended illness.
He was born Nov. 1, 1946, in Parsons to Fielding S. and Eulalia M. (Moriarty) Hopkins. He grew up in St. Paul and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1964.
From 1964 to 1968, he served in the U.S. Air Force and served in Vietnam in 1967-68.
On Nov. 11, 1970, he married JoAnn Bogner at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Greenbush. They spent most of their married life in the Wichita area, where Jim was employed many years by Kansas Gas and Electric Co., later Westar Energy. He was manager of substation construction for KG&E. JoAnn preceded him in death on June 29, 2004.
He was a member of Church of the Magdalen in Wichita.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Brian J. Hopkins and his wife, Rachel, and their children, Julia Nicole and Fielding Scott Hopkins, of Littleton, Colo., and Gregory W. Hopkins of Wichita; a daughter, Jan Marie Hopkins and her daughters, Shannon and Sarah Jo, of Wichita; two sisters, Karen Steinbacher of St. Paul and Janet Moore and her husband, Dale, of Edwardsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents also preceded him in death.
There will be a vigil service and visitation at 7:30 p.m. today at Church of the Magdalen, 12626 E. 21st St., Wichita, under the direction of Downing and Lahey East Mortuary. The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at Carson-Wall Funeral Home in St. Paul. The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
