River bridge project set for completion in
May 2025
ERIE — The Neosho River bridge project south of Erie is progressing and is so far on budget, a Kansas Department of Transportation official said.
The Neosho River bridge two miles south of Erie closed to traffic on Jan. 30 and was removed by A.M. Cohron and Son Inc., Atlantic, Iowa. The budget for replacing the structure is $11.2 million and the project is within budget to date, according to Priscilla Petersen, a KDOT spokesperson in Chanute.
Petersen said the contractor is working on the substructure of the new bridge by building piers and abutments.
The project has 85 working days and 40 clean up days remaining, she said last week. A.M. Cohron’s schedule shows final completion by May 2025. KDOT originally estimated the bridge would open by January 2025.
Traffic has been rerouted to U.S. 169 to avoid the construction project.
The U.S. 59 railroad bridge north of Parsons will be replaced after the Neosho River bridge south of Erie is complete. Petersen said the railroad overpass bridge is now scheduled to be let for bids in November.
“We plan to open the Neosho River bridge to traffic before starting work on the overpass. More information will be available about the overpass project following the letting,” Petersen said.
