A fire in a second-story room damaged a Parsons home on Friday evening. No injuries resulted.
Parsons Fire Chief Brad Boss said firefighters were called at 6:30 p.m. Friday to 2729 Chess. The original call was a small fire around an electrical outlet where a space heater was plugged in.
Boss said when firefighters arrived they could see flames in a attic vent at the top of the house. Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.
“The crew did a really good job,” Boss said.
The fire was contained to the second story wall where the fire originated and the attic area.
The house was occupied by Rhonda Lewis and Alazae Stewart.
At this time, Boss estimated damage to the house at $5,000 and another $2,000 damage to contents. Crews had to pull the electrical meter to the house.
Boss said as the temperatures drop this winter that more people may opt to use a space heater. He said care should be taken with these machines because of their power use and that could create problems in homes with older electrical service.
