PITTSBURG — A Pittsburg High School senior died late Monday afternoon at the scene of a one-vehicle accident.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said the accident happened at 5:45 p.m. Monday on South Rouse Street about one-half of a mile south of K-126. The accident happened 180 feet north of Adams Street, the KHP said.
A Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Nathan Brown, 17, Pittsburg, was northbound on Rouse when, for an unknown reason, the Santa Fe left the road to the left and struck a tree.
The Pittsburg Fire Department responded as well. The vehicle had caught fire after impact and the driver was trapped in the vehicle. Firefighters extinguished the fire, according to a release from the fire department. Authorities said Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brown was wearing his seat belt, the KHP report said. His body was taken to Kansas City, Kansas, for an autopsy.
