Former Chetopan dies in wreck

QUAPAW, Okla. — A former Chetopa woman died in a two-vehicle wreck earlier this month and her passenger was injured.

The collision happened at 4:26 a.m. Dec. 4 on the Will Rogers Turnpike in the eastbound lane 3 miles south of Quapaw, Oklahoma, in Ottawa County and was released by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol on Tuesday.

The accident remains under investigation. According to the patrol, a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Christian Guarez, 19, of Carthage, Missouri, collided with a 1997 Ford Expedition driven by Rachelle Cabral, 53, of Miami, Oklahoma. The patrol said Guarez was not injured but Cabral was taken to Mercy Hospital in Joplin in critical condition. She died from her injuries on Dec. 18. Her passenger, Denise Perritt, 56, of Miami, Oklahoma, was taken to Mercy as well with head and trunk injuries.

The patrol said Cabral and Perritt, both formerly of Chetopa, were not wearing seat belts. Guarez was wearing a seat belt.
