Labette County girls lose first game in Burlington Invitational championship

BURLINGTON — Playing the title game of the Burlington Invitational, the Labette County Grizzlies girls suffered their first loss of the season, 70-60, to Silver Lake.

Labette County defeated Paola, 55-23, in the first round then Burlington, 49-45, in overtime in the semifinals.

“I’m proud of our grit,” Labette County head coach Brianna Volmer said. “We have to give ourselves a chance earlier. We hung with the defending (Class 3A) state champions and at one point cut it to a 3-point game. So I’m proud of our guts and ability to scramble around and make plays.”

Landry O’Brien scored 23 points in the loss to Silver Lake to pace the Grizzlies, while Aubrey Boss added 11.

The loss dips Labette County’s record to 10-1 overall.

“Hopefully we use this as motivation and mature as athletes after this great experience,” Volmer said.
