Traffic stop leads to broader drug investigation

A traffic stop early Thursday led to one arrest and an investigation into that stop led to two more arrests on allegations of drug possession.

The traffic stop happened at 1 a.m. Thursday in the 1600 block of Thornton. Officers recovered drug paraphernalia in the vehicle and arrested a passenger in the vehicle, Karen D. Murphy, 57, of Parsons. She was arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia. She has since been charged with possession of methamphetamine, a felony, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors. She returns to court on Feb. 6.

Further investigation by officers revealed information about the origin of the narcotics and marijuana found in Murphy’s possession. Officers applied for a search warrant and searched 1014 S. 16th St. at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, according to a release from Parsons police.

The operation involved officers and detectives who searched the property and found over 30 items of evidence linked to the use, sale and distribution of drugs, the release said. The evidence included pills, methamphetamine, marijuana and other drug-related items.

Of the three people in the residence, officers arrested two: Larry N. McQuarie Jr. and Lisa Lynae Stover. The third person was released. Stover attempted to run to avoid arrest but was quickly See TRAFFIC, Page 2.

apprehended by officers. Mc-Quarie is a registered drug offender from a 2012 conviction for manufacturing a controlled substance.

McQuarie has been charged with possession of meth, possession of amphetamine and dextroamphetamine, aggravated weapons violation by a convicted felon, all felonies, and four misdemeanors. Stover has been charged with possession of meth, attempted aggravated escape, both felonies, and a misdemeanor.

“This case underscores the importance of diligent policing and proactive investigations,” said Police Chief Robert Spinks.

Spinks emphasized the importance of community involvement in combating illegal drug activity.

This continues to be an ongoing investigation. If anyone has any further information, contact the Parsons Police Department at 620-421-7060, the Tip Line at 421-7057 or email [email protected].
