MOUND VALLEY — Ruby F. Black, 89, of Mound Valley died at 7:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 27, 2025, at the Oswego Health and Rehab facility.
She was born Feb. 10, 1935, at rural Cherryvale, a daughter of Charles and Zenobia Eva (Thomas) Reed. She was raised at Cherryvale, Dennis and Mound Valley and attended elementary school at Cherryvale. She later attended and graduated from the Labette County Community High School with the Class of 1951.
On Feb. 6, 1954, she married Robert L. Black at Oswego. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2009.
She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Church. She enjoyed working Sudoku and crossword puzzles. She was a Sunday school teacher for many years and passed out Juicy Fruit gum to her students.
Survivors include a son, Steve Black (Nancy) of rural Mound Valley; two daughters, Debbie Barragar (Craig) of rural Mound Valley and Marla Sexton (Jeft) of rural Altamont; seven grandchildren, Angie Fogleman (Tim), of rural Parsons, Charlie Black of rural Mound Valley, Wendi Black of rural Mound Valley, Kristin Harlan of rural Mound Valley, Michael Sexton (Sara) of rural Mound Valley, Tiffani Garrelts (Andrew) of Grimes, Iowa, and Justin Sexton (Madeline0 of Cherokee; 16 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren, including Sweet Pea; and a sister, Waydella Hart of Oologah, Oklahoma.
She was preceded in death by a brother, George Reed; two sisters, Doris York and Pat Studebaker; and a daughter, Dawn Michelle Black.
The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Pleasant Hill Church with Tony Encarnacion officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Pleasant Hill Church or to Crown of Power Equine Therapy.
