Dorothy A. Nelson, 89, of Parsons passed away late Saturday morning, Feb. 1, 2025, at her home following a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 6, 1936, at Chanute to Leonard M. and Anna E. (Dunn) Youngberg. She grew up in Chanute and graduated from Chanute High School in 1953. She attended Chanute Junior Collegefor one year.
On June 9, 1956, she married Kermit Nelson in Chanute. They also lived briefly in Pittsburg before moving to Parsons in 1959. Kermit worked in the printing business and in 1967 they established Par-Forms Printing Co., which is still operated by their sons. Dorothy worked in the business as bookkeeper/ controller until she retired.
The Nelsons were members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church until its closing and since have been active in St. Patrick Catholic Church until her health prevented her from attending. She loved shopping, spending time with her family and having lunch with friends. Later in life she enjoyed the casinos and was a whiz with electronics. She loved watching sports, especially the University of Kansas basketball and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Every morning she and her soulmate enjoyed sitting with their coffee and watching birds.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of almost 69 years, Kermit Nelson; sons, Tim Nelson (Kristi) and Dan Nelson of Parsons; daughter, Beth Eckley (Alan) of Olathe; grandchildren, Jamie Stover, Sarah Baxter (Brian), Mark Nelson (Stacie), Amanda Blackburn, Adam Nelson (Tonie), Elizabeth Swan (Kent), Johnny Eckley (Katie); 19 great-grandchildren; brother, Howard Youngberg of Topeka; and sister, Helen Ranabargar (Lynn) of Chanute.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and daughter-inlaw, Brenda Nelson.
The memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at St. Patrick Catholic Church with the Rev. Nic Jurgensmeyer officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
The rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Carson- Wall Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following from 7 to 8 p.m.
