Daqueta D. Shelley

PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Daqueta D. Shelley, 96, of Palm Harbor, Florida, and a former Labette County resident, passed away at 7:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025, at her home and the home of her daughter, Kyla Carney.

She was born on Sept. 4, 1928, at Altamont to Frank and Violet (Davidson) Barnett. She grew up at Altamont and attended Labette County schools. Daqueta attended and graduated from beautician and cosmetology school at Parsons.

She married Richard Shelley on March 20, 1948, at Altamont. He preceded her in death on April 8, 2002.

She lived in Oswego, where she owned and operated a hair salon. They later moved to Tulsa and returned to Altamont. She worked at the courthouse and the Altamont Lumber Yard. They moved to Hillsboro in 1969 and then to Council Grove in 1984. Following her retirement and after her husband passed away, she lived in Manhattan and Des Moines, Iowa, before moving to Palm Harbor. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of Hope in Palm Harbor. She was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Altamont.

Daqueta enjoyed writing prose and poetry, gardening, flowers, volunteering and was a phenomenal cook, cooking everything from scratch.

She is survived by her son, Phillip Shelley and his wife, Linda, of Joplin, Missouri; her daughters, Marcia Boring and her husband, Brent, of Erie and Kyla Carney and her husband, Chris, of Palm Harbor, Florida; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; her brother, Ivan Barnett of Topeka; her sister, Esther Johnson of D’Hanis, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Vernon Barnett; and her sisters, Verdna Barnett, Cleda Hosfelt, Leda Clark and Mona Harris.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at the First Baptist Church in Altamont with the Rev. Travis Ball officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Altamont. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until

service time on Friday. The family suggests memorials to the KSDS Assistance Dog Training of Washington, Kansas, or to the Susan G.
