ALTAMONT — With state tournament bids at stake, Labette County was the host of the KSHSAA 4A Regional boys wrestling tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Paola ran away with the team title, recording 242 points to secure the championship. Columbus was runner-up with 146.5 points.
Frontenac was third with 146 points, followed by Chanute (123), Fort Scott (122), Louisburg (111.5), Prairie View (74), Labette County (73), Independence (65), Girard (59.5), Osawatomie (52), Coffeyville (40.5), Iola (36), Anderson County (19.5), Burlington (18) and Parsons (13).
Labette County
Cason Wyrick was the star for the hosts as Labette County’s 157-pounder won the regional title in his weight class.
Cason pinned all four of his opponents — Arian Roe of Independence, Trenton Lacen of Columbus, Brody Latto of Paola and Kale Pratt of Iola in the championship bout.
Aaron Wyrick also earned a ticket to the state tournament, taking third in at 144 pounds.
Aaron pinned Independence’s Bryson Fulk in his first match before getting pinned by Frontenac’s Cash Wilderman. Aaron pinned Braun Stone of Columbus in the blood round to earn a state bid then won by technical fall over Bo Small of Chanute in the third place match.
John Broadwell was one win shy of making state for Labette County at 215 pounds, getting pinned late in the third period by Karter Naff of Chanute.
Chanute
Seven Blue Comets will head to Salina for state after finishing in the top four of Saturday’s regional.
Logan Axelson was the top placer for Chanute, taking runner-up at 120 pounds. Axelson beat Parsons’ Mario Zacarias by decision in the first round before pinning Independence’s Kyson Knight. Axelson then secured a technical fall over Canaan Clayton of Louisburg before getting pinned by Columbus’ Korbyn Newberry in the title bout.
Johnathan Woods finished fourth at 113 pounds, battling through the backside after losing a major decision to Carlson Britt of Columbus in the quarterfinals. Woods pinned Dalton Blevins of Parsons then won a major decision over Kam’Ron Ford of Coffeyville. In the blood round, Woods won a 13-9 decision against Parker Showalter of Louisburg.
Britt again beat Axelson in the thirdplace match.
Bo Small took fourth place at 144 pounds, beating Parker Slayman of Osawatomie and Bryson Fulk of Independence but losing to Hagen Blanck of Paola and Aaron Wyrick of Labette County.
Quinton Harding finished third at 165 pounds, going 4-1 over five matches. Harding’s lone loss came in the semifinals to Brody Gomez of Fort Scott.
In the blood round, Harding won a 9-5 decision over Louisburg’s Jay Mc-Caskill before pinning Osawatomie’s Dodge Browning in the third-place match.
Cade Small took third place at 190 pounds, pinning Jeremiah Melugin of Independence in the blood round then pinning Ryder Newton of Fort Scott in the third-place match.
Karter Naff punched a ticket to state at 215 pounds, taking third place. Naff won three straight matches to end his day at regionals, highlighted by a pin of John Broadwell of Labette County in the blood round. Naff won his thirdplace match over Kash Smith of Columbus via medical forfeit.
Brady Alonzo will represent the heavyweight class at state for Chanute as he also secured third place on Saturday. Alonzo pinned Josh Goodwin of Prairie View in the third-place match.
Parsons
Mario Zacarias at 120 pounds was the closest to making state for Parsons. Zacarias won back-to-back decisions over Mark Stroud of Frontenac and Trapper Boren of Iola to earn a spot in the blood round. There, Zacarias lost a 7-2 decision to Canaan Clayton of Louisburg.
