Parsons’ season ends with loss to Blue Comets

CHANUTE — Securing a postseason berth and ending the regular season on a two-game winning streak, the Chanute Blue Comets girls took down the Parsons Vikings, 5025, on Thursday.

Chanute beat Independence earlier in the week, locking up a sub-state bid.

“We’re getting effort on the defensive end and felt comfortable in our 1-31,” Chanute head coach Dustin Fox said. “Our girls are seeing things early and making plays. We’re doing a better job finishing offensively, too.”

Sarah Uhner led Chanute with 14 points in Thursday’s win while Ayanna Robertson paced the Vikings with seven points.

“It was lots of turnovers and you can’t win when you can’t put the ball in the hole,” Parsons head coach West Krull said. “Chanute just didn’t let us get set up in our offense. Hopefully the girls keep learning.”

Parsons’ season came to an end with the loss — the Vikings ended with a 2-18 record.

“Coming in, we knew it’d be rough. A lot of people expected this, but I expected a little bit more,” Krull said. “I thought we’d have around four or five wins. We lost some players and didn’t have some others. But I still think the outcome would’ve been the same. These girls went through a lot, just not a lot of Ws. They’re learning how to be teammates.”

In the midst of a massive rebuild, the formula for Krull isn’t complicated.

“We’ve got to find our priorities,” Krull said. “We’ll look at our personnel and switch some girls around. We’ve got to keep on with the young kids. We had some big changes in our offense because I was naive. We’ve got to keep it simple to keep girls on the same page. And we need reps — that’s the biggest thing we need.”
