Pavement project starts next week

Monday, March 10, the Kansas Department of Transportation plans to begin a project to remove and replace the pavement markings at three roundabouts on the state highway system in Southeast Kansas.

The roundabouts are at the following locations: U.S. 69A and K-66 at Riverton; U.S. 160 and U.S. 59 east of Altamont; K-68 and Old Kansas City Road at Paola.

The pavement marking project will start at the Riverton roundabout, then move west to Altamont and north to Paola. The contractor expects to spend 10 to 15 days working at each roundabout, weather permitting. Flaggers will direct traffic through each work zone, with delays of no longer than 15 minutes.

Heartland Traffic Services Inc. of Kansas City, Kansas, is the primary contractor.

6 U.P. cars derail

Six cars of a Union Pacific Railroad train derailed on Friday evening near the Crawford Avenue crossing in Parsons.

Parsons police, the Kansas Highway Patrol and other agencies responded.

Meg Siffring, corporate communications and media relations manager for the U.P. said the derailment occurred at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28.

There were no injuries and no hazardous materials releases. The cause of the derailment is under investigation, Siffring said in an email.

Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks said the loads included rubber pellets and tallow. One car contained propane but was not leaking.
