Teen’s death caused by self-inflicted gunshot

Parsons police this week released autopsy results from the investigation into the death of a Parsons teenager on June 25.

According to the findings from the medical examiner, the cause of death was determined to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police would not say if the wound was the result of suicide or an accidental discharge from a firearm.

The Parsons Police Department investigated the case, collaborating with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), followed every lead and examined all available evidence before ruling out homicide as the cause, according to a release from police.

The Parsons Sun identified the teen as JahMarcus Washington. He would have been a senior at Parsons High School this year.

At 6:11 p.m. June 25, Parsons police were dispatched to the 2600 block of Grand following a report of a gunshot.

Upon arrival, officers discovered the teenager who appeared to have sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Three juvenile witnesses were present.

“I cannot begin to imagine the profound loss that the family, friends and loved ones are enduring. This heartbreaking event has affected not only those closest to the victim but also our entire community. In these difficult times, we turn to one another for support, sharing in the grief and honoring the memory of the loved one we’ve lost,” Parsons Police Chief Robert Spinks said in the statement this week.
