Stephen E. ‘Steve’ Workman

Stephen E. “Steve” Workman, 80, died Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Elmhaven of Parsons.

Steve was born March 6, 1945, in Parsons to James F. and Anne C. (Munding) Workman. He was one of eight children.

Steve attended St. Patrick’s School for 13 years (K-12). He attended Labette Community College for two years and Coffeyville Community College for one year. He worked for seven years for the Katy Railroad as a maintenance of way machine operator. He was an electrician with IBEW for 45 years until 2009. He was still a retired member of the IBEW at the time of his passing.

Steve proudly served his country in the United States Army. He had two medals of commendation from being a Vietnam War veteran.

Steve was married to Ann Shumate for 16.5 years. The couple divorced. He has been with his soulmate and significant other, Marilyn Prather, since 1985.

Steve was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church of Iola, the Knights of Columbus in Chanute, the American Legion of Chanute and most recently attended St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parsons.

He is survived by his sister, Kristina Baker of Parsons; his sister- in-law, Beth Workman of Conway, Arkansas; many nieces and nephews; and his adopted granddaughter, Kaysha Elmenhurst of rural LaHarpe.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Judith “Judy” Huff and Trudy Nienheuser; four brothers, Tony, Mark, David and Paul Workman; and two dear aunts, Ramona Carnahan and Dorothy VanLeewen.

The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 21, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Parsons. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Parsons. The rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. The family will receive friends following the rosary.
