Shawn Turner, area engineer for TranSystems, speaks with Richard Erickson Tuesday afternoon in the City Park Building in Altamont about his road safety concerns for the coming years. The Southeast Kansas Regional Planning Commission is developing a comprehensive safety action plan for the 12 counties in the region. After this is done, communities can apply for Safe Streets and Roads for All grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Projects identified by those attending, or that had already been identified, include adding shoulders on U.S. 101 before traffic is detoured around the Union Pacific Railroad bridge north of Parsons and safety improvements on 23000 Road, the former alignment of U.S. 400.
