Rebecca “Becky” Minor, 77, of Parsons passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, in Joplin, Missouri.
Born on Nov. 1, 1946, to Ezra Milton and Minnie Belle (Fulton) Long, Becky’s life was marked by her fervent enthusiasm and dedication to her family, friends and community.
Becky was a proud alumna of Kansas State University, where she cultivated her lifelong passion for music. She devoted her career to teaching and providing piano lessons that inspired countless students. Beyond her professional life, Becky was a dedicated member of both the Mount Zion Community Church and the St. John’s Episcopal Church, where she played the organ each Sunday.
An avid bass fisherwoman, Becky found peace and joy in the great outdoors. Known to many as “Grandma Bass,” she dedicated many hours to promoting and directing numerous bass tournaments. As one of a few women to participate in a primarily male sport, Becky took pride in earning big-bass honors and Lady Angler of the Year honors in American Bass Anglers national tournaments. She served as division director for the American Bass Association in Southeast Kansas and worked tirelessly to grow the circuit to build a following. Her impact will be felt for years to come.
Her enthusiasm for fishing was matched by her love for her family. She often shared her passions with her grandchildren, imparting lessons on music, teaching and the great outdoors.
Becky is survived by her loving husband, Ben Minor of Parsons; a daughter, Dana York and son-in-law David of Joplin, Missouri; a son, Dustin McIlvain and daughter-in-law Sara of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; grandchildren, Danielle York, Darci York, Derek York, Dillon McIlvain and Kylie McIlvain; and great-grandson, Wallace McIlvain.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ezra and Minnie Belle Long; a brother, John Long; and a sister, Lucy Brooke.
A celebration of life will be at a later date to honor Becky’s remarkable life. A memorial fund will be established in honor of Becky to benefit her fishing community. Further information on donating will be provided once it is established.
