Chanute woman dies in wreck

THAYER — A Chanute woman died Thursday morning in a two-vehicle, nearly head-on collision on U.S. 169 south of Thayer.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said the accident happened at 8:04 a.m. Thursday on U.S. 169 two-tenths of a mile south of Thayer.

Janee M. Umbarger, 55, was northbound on the highway in a 2021 Nissan Kicks. Carrol E. Clark, 76, of Piqua was southbound in a 2009 GMC Sierra pickup. Umbarger’s vehicle veered into the southbound lane and Clark attempted to avoid the collision by steering to the left. He was unable to and Umbarger’s vehicle struck Clark’s pickup in an offset head-on collision in the center of the road, the KHP report said.

Umbarger, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene. Clark, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for suspected minor injuries, the report said.
