CHANUTE — Surrendering a three-run lead in the final two frames, the Labette County Grizzlies fell to the Chanute Blue Comets, 8-6, on Monday in SEK League softball play.

In a game where the lead changed hands four times, Chanute scored five runs over the last two innings to steal the win from the Grizzlies.

“It was just the last inning where we didn’t get some hits,” Labette County head coach Hanna Haraughty said. “If we had some solid defense, I thought we had a chance to force extra innings.”

Sierra Hill was charged with the loss in the circle, striking out one batter while allowing nine hits and eight runs, four of them earned.

Carlee Walker had three hits, two runs and two RBIs out of the nine-hole for the Grizzlies.

“I want to create a lineup where no matter where somebody is, we’re going to be solid,” Haraughty said. “I don’t want our lineup to shut off. That girl is a freshman who has been clutch for us. Any of our hitters have the ability to be a star hitter.”

Karsyn Bates added and Braylea Nutter added two hits apiece to Labette County’s offense in the loss.

Labette County’s loss to Chanute was its second in a row to the Blue Comets after a 14-8 defeat in Altamont on Thursday.

“The first game, it was the first inning that determined the outcome,” Haraughty said. “This game, we played more consistently throughout seven innings. I was proud of the girls for that.”
